CARL LAEMMLE with filmmaker James L. Freedman and food by Zabar's
Tuesday, June 21
8:00 PM
The tag line of Carl Laemmle’s life could be boiled down to 19 words: The man who brought America its first make-believe monsters went on to save 300 Jews from a real one.
But in this documentary, you’ll discover the back story of the German-Jewish immigrant who invented the modern movie business, created Universal City and produced All Quiet on the Western Front, winning Universal its first Best Picture Oscar. Forced to sell the studio during the depression, he turned his attention to the plight of Europe’s Jews, facing down both the Nazis and the US State Department to rescue 300 refugees.
