Frank Bruni in Conversation with Maureen Dowd: Vision Lost, Vision Found

By The Temple Emanu-El Streicker Center: Spring 2022 (other events)

Wednesday, March 2 2022 6:30 PM EDT

ABOUT ABOUT

During his long career as a writer, Frank Bruni has followed presidential candidates across America; rattled the nerves of New York City restaurateurs; dodged Scud missiles in Saudi Arabia; snooped around the Vatican; and opined on everything from football to the debased state of American political discourse.

He has also revealed himself — as a child born round but with the gift of three siblings; a man blessed with parents who didn’t freak out when he came out; and as a firm believer in the healing power of meatloaf.

Upon the release of his new book, The Beauty of Dusk, Frank returns to The Temple Emanu-El Streicker Center to discuss the challenges he faced after waking up one morning with limited vision in one eye . . . and learning that it might happen to the other. Confronted with the stark choice most of us will face at some point — because of illness, injury or aging — Bruni surprised himself by eschewing self-pity and finding new ways to let light into his life.

After more than 26 years on the staff of The New York Times, Bruni joined the faculty of Duke University but continues writing a newsletter for the Times. He is the author of three earlier bestselling books.

He will be in conversation with Pulitzer Prize–winning New York Times columnist Maureen Dowd.
